An extensive 60-day voyage around the Land Down Under has been cancelled in the wake of the death of an elderly woman who was abandoned by the vessel on a distant coastal location.

The elderly woman had been trekking on the remote island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but broke off from the excursion for a break. The ship sailed away leaving her and went back later that day after the crew realised the lady was missing.

An extensive rescue mission found her body the subsequent day.

Authorities are examining the event, in coordination with investigators and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the shipping company said that passengers and crew on the Coral Adventurer were notified that the rest of the voyage had been called off due to the "sad loss and earlier technical problems".

In a statement, he added that travelers would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the company was working "to coordinate the homeward trips of the passengers via specially arranged planes".

Regulatory bodies also published an updated statement, and said they had "provided a order to the Master" preventing any new passengers from entering the vessel.

The official said that they would attend the ship in the port city upon its arrival.

Chronology of Occurrences

The vessel initially left Cairns on 24 October, and was only 48 hours into the journey at the moment of the senior passenger's passing. The tropical location was the opening port on the itinerary.

Travelers on the vessel - who typically pay large sums of dollars to join the expedition - were taken there for a shore visit with the possibility of walking or underwater exploration.

The daughter of the victim said that her family was "stunned and distressed that the liner left the island after an planned tour without my mother".
