British Expands Methanol Toxicity Warning List with Eleven Countries
British Foreign Office has added an additional eleven further destinations to its public alert register regarding the dangers of methanol contamination from contaminated alcoholic drinks.
This revised warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a worldwide rise in the number of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol poisoning.
Just last month, authorities had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, after several high-profile incidents including the tragic demise of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that even minimal doses of industrial alcohol can result in vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hours.

Methanol is a toxic chemical commonly utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. It is not designed for human consumption.
Although it is generated during the production of beverages, reputable manufacturers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the distillation process.
However in some countries, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and since it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.

Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should recognize the indicators of toxic alcohol contamination.
"When you are drinking spirits overseas, stick to well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," Falconer advised.
"In case something feels off, for example a hangover that's much more severe than typical or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor fast."
