Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress After Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
